TCF Ep. 624 - Martin Parr
Martin Parr, Story-Teller Workshop, War Photographers, and new Monograph by Lindokuhle Sobekwa
TCF Ep. 623 - Martin Parr
Certain photographers have been on my short list for years. Martin Parr was one of them. I am glad to interview him for the show finally. The opportunity coincided with the release of his latest book, Fashion Faux Parr. The book collects his fashion imagery, a culmination of both his personal and commissioned work. These images retain his signature style which emphasizes color, the mundane, and a wry sense of humor. I hope Ep. 624 provides insight into the master photographer who has influenced generations of image-makers.
I carry Her photo with Me - Lindokuhle Sobekwa
I carry Her photo with Me is an unusual and beautiful monograph that began as a way for Magnum photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa to rediscover his late sister. She had been absent both in his life and in family photographs, and as a photographer, he explored that absence through photographs. The book takes the form of a scrapbook consisting of photographs and handwritten notes. It is a beautiful, powerful, and intimate work that examines themes of family, loss, and the importance of memory.
Story-Teller Workshop with Dotan Saguy & Gail Fisher
Dotan Saguy has appeared as a guest on TCF several times. With each appearance, he has shared his unique approach to both street and documentary photography. His monograph, Venice Beach: The Last Days of a Bohemian Paradise, was one of my favorite photo books of 2018 not only because of the photographs but also because of his ability to produce a unique take on one of Los Angeles’ most frequently photographed locations.
Now, Dotan and former National Geographic editor Gail Fisher are offering an exceptional photographic workshop in Provence, France this summer. In the Storyteller Workshops, Dotan and Gail teach their approaches to visual storytelling, while providing a memorable cultural experience in one of France’s most beautiful locations. War Photographers Break Down the Film, “CiviWar”
I recently streamed Alex Garland’s recent film Civil War, set in a hypothetical future where the United States is in the midst of a modern-day civil war. It follows several journalists played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley, as they travel the country in pursuit of the biggest story of their careers.
Inspired by the film, the DW YouTube Channel interviewed conflict photographers including Ron Haviv, John Moore, Lynsey Addario, Peter van Agtmael, and Mohamed Al Masri. They not only discuss their take on the film, but also share their personal experiences photographing war and conflict throughout the world, and the personal price they and their compatriots pay producing these kinds of photographs. You don’t have to have watched the film to appreciate this discussion.
Thank you for your continued kindness and support.
I have to say, that sounded like a tough interview
