David Hobby
David Hobby gained fame in the photo industry as a result of his popular blog, The Strobist. It was one of the most-influential blogs in the early years of the internet, introducing photographers to new creative ways to use speedlights.
David’s approach to using strobe was born out of the practical demands of a working photojournalist. A photographer needed to be both creative and resourceful when meeting the demands of a daily newspaper, where time and resources were not often abundant. However, those limitation led him to use speedlights as a tool to explore his creativity and imagination. He generously shared that knowledge with countless photographers, influencing several generations of professional and enthusiast photographers.
David has left The Strobist and work as a newspaper staffer behind, but he is not done with photography. He continues in his role as a photo educator leading photo experiences in South East Asia. His knowledge both as a photojournalist and travel photography have found a home in his new book, The Traveling Photographer’s Manifesto: A Guide to Connecting People and Place. It’s a wonderful book that teaches anyone how to make the most of travel where both photography and rich experiences are a priority.
Ep. 631 provided me a wonderful opportunity to revisit with David, play a little catch-up and discover new ways of making the most of my travel days. I hope that the episode provides you a few insights as well.
Street Photographer Eduardo Ortiz
There is no shortage of street photographers and channels dedicated to street photography on YouTube. Though the quality of the content varies greatly, I have to admit that it has nurtured an understanding and interest in the genre of street photography. There are several YouTubers and photographers I have discovered on the platform whose content I have enjoyed and have learned from.
I discovered Eduardo Ortiz via his YouTube channel, but it was a recent video where he was the subject that I wanted to share with you. Tim Jameson, did a beautiful of following Eduardo Ortiz has he created and discussed his approach to composition. Eduardo’s sense of composition and his use of color is exceptional. The video captures this as well as his rapport with his subjects, many of whom are perfect strangers. I think that you’ll enjoy the video, even if you have little interest in street photography.

Lee - Biopic of Photojournalist Lee Miller
Kate Winslet stars are the famed photojournalist Lee Miller in this biopic that has recently become available on streaming. She began he photographic career as a model, but eventually defined herself with her work behind the camera. The film provides a wonderful introduction to a photographer who should be better-known than she is. I hope it will provide an introduction to an exceptional person and photographer.
Thank you for introducing me to David Hobby.
